Washi or 和紙 is a Japanese word that describes the paper which used local fiber and processed by traditional method. The word in contrast is Yoshi or 洋紙 which describes the pulp paper that processed by machines and chemicals.
This washi filter is fully made by paper mulberry bush (楮) and the fiber from this plant is narrower, longer and more intense than the regular pulp paper's fiber. So washi filter can filtered more impurities while keeping more flavours from coffee.
Also thanks to the fiber, I feel this washi filter has almost the same thickness but better strength compares to Kalita Wave Filter, which means this washi filter is less likely to deform.
Based on personal experience, this Washi Filter can neutralize the bitterness and astringency in dark roast coffee, and the flow rate of this filter is slower than Kalita Wave Filter so the immersion time will be longer, which makes it a good fit with dark roast coffee.
