Introduction of Hakka-Life Wild Lily Dripper

Recent few years, the coffee industry seems not satisfied with the regular 60º interior angle conical drippers, we now have wider angle like 62º and 80º, or narrower like 27º or 30º. The dripper we are talking today, Wild Lily has something in between, 45º.

Structure

- In a narrower interior angle, we can expect a higher coffee bed. In specific, for 20g coffee, the height of coffee bed in Hario V60 is around 4.5cm, and in Wild Lily is 7.3cm (the height will be different depending on the variety and roast level of coffee, in this case we are using the same coffee bean to measure). Higher coffee bed means a longer water path from top to bottom which leads to a longer contact time between coffee and water. We can expect a higher extraction rate. Plus, a narrower opening is easier for doing the “circle motion” in pouring.

- This dripper has 6 ribs (the brown lines in picture above) and 6 grooves (the joining seams) run through the dripper from top to bottom. In the picture below we can see the major air channel is created by the grooves while the ribs provide support to the filter and lead the water direction. So the flow rate is stable and smooth from beginning till end.

Personal tips

A higher coffee bed also means your water stream has less impact on the lower part of coffee bed. So I recommend pouring slowly in the “circle motion” and ended with central pour on each pour. It helps the water stream to reach the lower part.

I also recommend to grind coarser and use the multiple pour and pause while using this dripper, it helps to balance the extraction on upper and lower part. And you can expecting a concentrate and intense flavours in the cup.

I personally prefer to use light roast beans with this dripper, cause light roast beans have a tight interior structure and hard to be extracted, this dripper will helps on that. Dark roast beans usually needs a wider room to expand and we don’t want to extract too much from them, so might not be very suitable for Wild Lily.

Since the coffee bed gets higher, it is sometimes hard to play with the water level. That’s why I only use 4cups size, it handles with 20-30g coffee with no issue to rising the water level.

Folding paper filter

There is no special paper filter for this dripper so we will need to fold the 02 size paper filter to fit, it is quite easy to do: starting with the "sealed side" of the paper filter, fold at the 1/3 place of the filter. Then open the filter on the left opening, put it on dripper, that's it. Rinse the filter will helps it to fit better, even though it is not necessary.
